Audio piece:
This audio piece blends 5 of my own poems with dialogue from Michael Haneke’s film La Pianiste (2001). The masochism and desperation for love described in Erika’s letter reminded me both of my own experience dating and my relationship with my body as a gay man: confused by your own desires, uncomfortable in your own skin, feeling as though something is wrong with you, suppressing it, feeling perverse or strange, out of place, comparing your flesh to the perfect bodies everyone else seems to have or to want, being objectified or used when you were looking for romance, not knowing when you began to accept, and even crave the validation of, this dehumanising treatment. Casual sex becomes a humiliation ritual, degrading, yet you want it again and again and again. You want love, but can’t find someone who wants you back. When you do, it feels wrong, the sex is too intimate, too kind. You realise they are actually looking at your body, lovingly, and that disturbs you. You wonder, how can someone else love my body when I’ve been at war with it since I was a kid?
